My mother taught me well, always scrap the bowl Joan! That message has been ingrained into my head ever since I was a youngster and what a good one it is. You'd be surprised, you just might get another muffin out of a batch or another cookie if you clean the bowl well.
What better tool than the silicone spatula to do it.Okay so what's so special about a silicone spatula versus just a regular plastic one that we grew up with? It's all in the engineering. Silicone is heat resistant and has a high melting point. How many plastic spatulas are sitting in your drawer that are gnarly from sitting a little to close to the element or perhaps you were stirring a pot of boiling cream and the end was chewed to bits. You can be guaranteed that your silicone spatula will never melt in your pot of boiling caramel!
I have had both of mine for well over 7 years, perhaps longer and they look brand new. I have the wooden handle variety but you can also find stainless steel, with a heftier price tag mind you. I'm not a big fan of the stainless steel variety, I'd rather save the money they'd most likely be hiding in a drawer or sitting in a jar anyway. I'd stick with the wood handle since wood is less of a conductor of heat over stainless steel. If you were to leave your stainless steel spatula in a pot on the stove the part of the handle that is touching the pot will pick up the heat from the pot and you better watch out, that can get pretty hot.
I use my spatulas on a daily basis and like I said they look brand new. I've used cheap plastic spatulas at work and they always end up chipping, cracking and the tops snap off. They simply do not stand up to the abuse and money is wasted. So next time you are scanning the kitchen gadgets and looking for something under $10 you know what to pick up!
Now a days you can get just about any kitchen tool in silicone from spatulas to mats, to muffin cups and loaf pans. I have yet to bother with the muffin and loaf pans but my cookie sheet, my baby, I'll share that one next week!
